Lighthouse History
Built: 1849 Type: 1849: 30' white brick tower; 1866: 38' white tower; 1879: 40' white, square pyramidal skeleton structure, standing on square foundation 12 feet high. Status: Destroyed 1890's Lens: Signal: Fog bell struck by machinery. Location: West side of the mouth of Cape Fear River Notes: The Oak Island Range Lights helped guide vessels past Oak Island Bar. 1849: the light fixed white, range 9 miles; 1866: the light fixed white, range 11 miles; 1879: the light fixed red, range 11 miles. |
