Notes: In 1868, a wooden frame beacon was erected 660 feet east of the Sapelo Lighthouse to serve as a front range light for guiding ships safely into Doboy Sounds. In less than a decade the tower was so deteriorated that a twenty-five-foot-tall iron beacon was built to replace it. The Coast Guard used the tower during World War II as a lookout for German submarines. Today, the ornate tower is located 600 feet east of the 1820 brick tower and received a fresh coat of paint when the Sapelo Lighthouse was restored by the state of Georgia in 1998.
